The Start of Space Exploration in F2

Date: 1st Mar 2024 @ 10:23am

We've had a wonderful week exploring space in F2 with the text Aliens Love Underpants as our main hook for this theme.

The children have been busy drawing a rocket and have begun work on their alien design. The first step in the design process has involved sketching and naming their own alien, followed by adding colour to finalise their creation. These design sheets will then be used for the children to create their own 3D model of an alien. The children displayed incredible imagination as they set to work being designers.

We would like to extend very warm thanks to all of the parents who attended our phonics session on Wednesday, it was wonderful to welcome you all into the classrooms again and we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did. We hope the session gave you a useful insight into how we teach phonics in school and how to support your children with their learning outside of the classroom.

As part of our Welly Wednesday learning this week we explored how we can help the wildlife in our school grounds during the Winter months. We focused on birds this week and made some bird feeders using cereal hoops and string. The children counted 10 pieces of cereal onto a ten-frame and then threaded them onto string. These were then knotted so that the hoops didn't escape. Each child carried their own feeder to the woods and carefully selected where they would like to place them. They have had to remember where they left them as we will revisit the woods next Welly Wednesday and examine if any of the hoops have been eaten by the hungry birds!

In maths we have been digging deeper into the numbers 9 and 10, using a variety of manipulatives to support learning. In a session focusing on identifying more or less than 9, the children sorted dominoes into three categories - dominoes with 9 spots, fewer than 9 spots and more then 9 spots. We have further explored the composition of 9 and 10, and have started looking at number bonds within all of the numbers up to 10.

We will be looking forward to seeing how the children choose to share their favourite characters from books on World Book Day which is Thursday 7th March.

Thank you again for your continued support,
