Dear Parent or Carer,
We would like to celebrate World Book Day on Thursday 4th March, but this year it is going to look a little bit different, due to the present circumstances.
We will be running a school ‘readathon’ for all children as previously, but will not be making it a sponsored event this year. This will take place over a 3 week period, commencing on Monday 8th February and culminating in a virtual celebration assembly as part of our World Book Day celebrations on Thursday 4th March.
Our aim is that this approach will encourage pupils to read more frequently and to read more widely. Pupils can choose whatever they want to read – whether it is their own books, Oak National Academy texts, instructions for games, comics or online blogs - it’s all about reading for fun!
Increasing reading frequency will have a massive impact on each child, enabling them to increase their reading speed and accuracy as well as foster a love for reading.
To support your child in this, they will need you to:
Help them make a ‘reading plan’. Support them in completing a reading book list that they intend to work through during the readathon period. Remember they can read whatever they want: books, e-books, poetry, comics – whatever they enjoy! All they must ensure is that they record their reading in a reading record attached.
To find out more about World Book Day and for further ideas on reading materials to support your child, please visit https://www.worldbookday.com
Each child who takes part in the readathon will earn a certificate which we will share online.
On World Book Day (Thursday 4th March) each class will have a Google Meet at an identified time in the day. Some children will have the opportunity to discuss their book, they could dress up at home as their favourite character, or bring a prop from their text. Keep your eye out for further information and reading activities and ideas on Google Classroom.
A few useful websites to support reading and language skills are below:
